Why This Blog…

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with atlas’s. I would read them cover to cover. I’d put on a Linkin Park CD on my boom box (yes, I’m that old), and just absorb as much as I could. Geography was my favorite subject, and maps, globes, and pictures from other places fascinated me. As I got older, my love for the subject never ceased, and I thought I might major in it at college. That never panned out, for better or worse, but that didn’t mean my interests had changed any.

My dream job? Hosting a show that traveled to each and every single country. The show would be an hour long and focus on a mix of six different categories: the geography of the country, the nature and ecosystems within, the history of that country, it’s food, it’s people and culture, and ending with why the future of that country looks bright (ending on a positive note is always a good thing for an education show right?) and why you should visit. Perhaps have some star guests on the show, like comedians or celebrities native to that country. I thought that not only would a show like that be awesome to watch but it could inspire people to see more of our world. See all the cool things your own country just doesn’t have. It would’ve been a GREAT show.

Fast forward a decade or so… I am a teacher, not a show runner coming up with awesome travel shows 😦 and for the most part, my interests still haven’t changed a ton… except I gained a new obsession. The state of Wisconsin. Slowly over the past 10-15 years or so, I have come to enjoy this state more and more to the point where I’ve got to be this state’s biggest fan. It’s to the point that almost everything I buy I try to make sure has a Wisconsin tie… food, clothing, beard care products, all of it. If I have business to do in a neighboring state, you better believe I’ll be getting a hotel in Wisconsin and driving to the function from there. Anything and everything about this state I love. The geography, the nature, the history, the food, the people and the culture… (have you made the connection yet?) so I thought, why not just take that awesome idea I had for a show that will unfortunately never happen in a million years, and re-focus it, putting the emphasis on the state of Wisconsin? It’s a big passion of mine, so why not express that passion?

I also love to write. So… if I can’t make a show about traveling the world, I’m going to write about traveling Wisconsin. What to do in Wisconsin, where to go, and why Wisconsin is worthy of your attention, money, and time. I’m going to attempt to make this blog in a similar style that I wanted for that show; a mix of geography, nature, history, food, people, and culture. I’m going to provide information on the best places to take a vacation in this state, the hidden gems, the reasons behind why this state is so awesome, tips and tricks for traveling, recipes, reviews, the history, and more. I hope anyone wanting information about this state, wanting ideas on where to go on vacation for cheap, or what to do when you have a free day but not a whole weekend, finds some value in this blog. While the blog will be the focus, I do plan to branch out to social media, and maybe even some day make some videos on YouTube and/or TikTok. My talents (or lack thereof) lie in writing though, so that will be focus for now.

This is a blog that will hopefully help you enjoy the most out of this state. As I do it and learn about it, so will you. The more I learn about this state, the more I’ve come to appreciate it, and I hope that a little bit of that enthusiasm can rub off on you. Unfortunately, I’m not rich. Most of my trips will be cost friendly (although I have a feeling that’s actually more of a benefit for my readers), but I just don’t have the money as a teacher to do it all. Fancy restaurants are pretty much out of the equation (supper clubs are about as fancy as it’ll get on here), so don’t get your hopes up in that regard. I also don’t really want to consider myself a “content creator”, I just want to provide facts about this state, reviews, and a nice list of what to do where. This state will be explored on a budget, and I hope you enjoy the journey with me. Finally… please leave comments! What do you like about what I wrote? What do I need to improve? I have big things in mind and need your help!
