Welcome to my blog about Wisconsin. I FREAKING love this state. I’m biased, but this is hands down the best state in the union. My name is Andy. I’m a teacher, coach, aspiring writer, and lover of ALL things Wisconsin. I’m starting this blog for several reasons… firstly, I love to write, hope to write more, and figure this would be a good idea to keep those skills sharp. Secondly, whenever I travel, I always try to take new ways, explore new places, and see as much of this state as possible. I love a good road trip. But finding out what you can do, and where, has always been the hard part. Simply searching “Things to do in…” rarely gives you good answers. I want the answers a local would give me. I’m hoping that this blog can fill that hole for anyone (the 2 or 3 of you that are reading it:), and in the process you all can give me ideas too, like I always wished I had. And lastly, I just want other people to know how awesome this state is. I hate hearing people, usually people from other states (but even worse if they’re from our own), say how boring this state is, or how there’s nothing to do. Yes there is! You just gotta be willing to go out there and find your own fun. This state is what you make it, and I’m going to prove it to you all.
On a recent trip to a family cottage, I took an even ‘back-er’ back way than normal (you’re going to find out quick how often I take the back roads), probably adding 30 minutes to the trip. My travel companion, probably eager to get to our destination so we can have more time to relax and just enjoy the weekend, looked at me and asked “How come you never take the fast way?” Without skipping a beat I answered “Life is too short to take the fast way”… hence the name of the blog. The statement might sound like an oxymoron, but I hope you read into it a bit more. By all means, have fun spending your life driving 10+ mph over the speed limit on I-39, Hwy. 41, or 94. Sure, you’ll get to your destination on time, but I promise you your life will be less meaningful for it. As you watch chain restaurant after chain store after gas station go by, you’re missing the flavor of the state. Instead, take that county road. Add 20-30 extra minutes to your drive. See something you’ve never seen before. Stop at that barn that’s now an antique store. Take a few minutes to get some cheese from a random store that also has cool gems and rocks in display cases because it doubles as a mineral-shop. Get out and get an ice cream cone at the small ice cream store that only serves out the window. Life is too short to not enjoy the ride, and in Wisconsin, the ride is the best part.
